Volunteer to Crew Member: Teymour’s Journey

Leader’s newest recruit is continuing a long-standing Trinity Sailing tradition of establishing himself as a fully fledged crew member after putting in the hours as a volunteer.

Teymour Kashani, from Essex, first heard of Trinity after his grandfather returned from a Provident charter a few years ago and since then decided he wanted to have a go on the traditional vessels himself.

He said: “I had an interest in sailing before as my uncle‘s also quite a yachty guy, I thought Trinity’s boats looked pretty cool so I did I my Duke of Edinburgh on Golden Vanity in 2013.”

From here the 19-year-old’s interest in traditional boat sailing grew and grew and he decided he wanted to join Leader at the 2014 Tall Ships Races.

He said: “On Golden Vanity I got speaking to Ben and Becca (Vanity’s crew at the time) about the Tall Ships and it sounded great, so I came back and took part in the third leg of the races sailing from Bergen, in Norway, to Esbjerg, in Denmark.

“It was better than I expected, a great atmosphere, everyone there was up for having a good time and it great getting to know so many people while enjoying such a celebratory atmosphere. Bergen was the highlight for me, lots of live bands, a great firework display, we won the crew parade and the crew party was great.”

After leaving sixth form in the summer Teymour could not decide what to do with his life and found himself wanting to take his new-found hobby to the next level.

He said: “I was at a bit of a loose end, not doing anything so I thought I would get involved in the Trinity refit, so I came down in January and I’m still here.

“I’ve really learnt a lot, had a lot of fun and met lots of new and nice people. I’ve learned how to maintain the boats, all about the rigging, and generally a lot more about the sailing industry.”

Teymour has now become a member of Trinity’s crew, being offered a position as deck-hand on board Leader, with a chance to do some relief work as bosun during 2015.
