Trinity Sailing awarded Topsail bursary

Trinity are very pleased to announce it has been awarded £1,200 by Topsail Insurance towards sail training bursaries in 2014.

Topsail Insurance, which provides worldwide specialist yacht and motor boat insurance, invited applications for the ‘Topsail Insurance Annual Bursary’ at the ASTO (Association of Sail Training Organisations)  conference earlier this year.

Laura Ruse, Manager at Topsail, said: “All applications submitted each provided a strong case for their worthy cause, making the decision a particularly tough one. A panel individually reviewed all the applications submitted and scored each one based on what was considered to be the most effective use of the Bursary. These scores were then collated to achieve a fair and unbiased total and a worthy recipient of the Bursary.

There was a huge variety of applications from sailing schools, charities, volunteers, trusts and societies; with a wide range of different uses for the bursary being proposed; from the provision of much needed training, participation in Cowes week for disadvantaged youths, to improving the lives of people in deprived areas through sail training.

Having reviewed the scores given it was concluded that Trinity Sailing Foundation would be this year’s recipients. Trinity Sailing supplied extensive information about the type of work they do supporting the personal development of disadvantaged young people – focusing on young people who are negotiating the transition to adult life and are at risk of failing to make successful changes. We understand the valuable life, leadership and personal skills earned through sail training and Trinity’s proposal of a week long sail training voyage for 12 people was of great interest, being able to help to enhance the lives of 12 people with the bursary really appealed to us”.

Following confirmation of the bursary Toby Russell, Trinity Director, said: “We are delighted to have been selected to receive the first annual Topsail bursary. This funding will enable a group of young people undertake a 7 day offshore sail training voyage on Leader in 2014. Leader offers a fantastic learning a development setting and one which we have used extensively to help disadvantaged young people overcome the challenges they face and take positive steps to improve their life chances. The creation of this annual bursary underlines Topsails commitment to the sail training industry and we are extremely grateful to their team for supporting our efforts”.
