Devon Youngsters Selected for Life-Changing Sail Adventure
The Trinity Sailing Foundation and The Royal Dart Yacht Club have selected the final group of deserving teenagers who will take part in a competitive race — against tall ships from across the UK — from Dartmouth to Gosport next month on board historic 1924-built Brixham Trawler Provident.
The 11 young people will join four Trinity Sailing crew members when they set off from Brixham on Saturday, August 20. They will spend a night in Dartmouth before the race begins the following day. When the race is finished, the group will spend several days and nights cruising and exploring the best of the Devon and Dorset coastline, stopping off in various pretty anchorages and ports, before arriving back in Brixham on Sunday, August 28.
The Royal Dart Yacht Club Provident 150 Challenge marks the 150th Anniversary of the Club, based in Kingswear. It forms part of the Small Ships Race 2016 which is being organised by ASTO (The Association of Sail Training Organisation) and hosted by the Royal Dart Yacht Club which involves dozens of UK sailing vessels taking part in racing and celebrations aimed at young people who can mingle with other crews from across the country.
Many generous members of the Royal Dart Yacht Club made donations to pass on to Trinity to help fund the voyage, which is valued at over £800 per person.
Harry Gottschalk, Trinity Sailing’s Sales & Marketing Manager, said: “I think I speak on behalf of everyone at Trinity and the yacht club when I say we cannot wait to see these young people gather on board Provident next month and see the initiative come to life.
“What are all looking forward to more than anything though is seeing these young men and women come back from their adventure and see how much confidence and self-belief they have developed, which we see time and time again on our regular sail training voyages.”
One of Trinity’s other vessels, Leader — built in 1892 — will be taking part in the Small Ships Races at the same time. People under the age of 25 can book one of the few remaining places on Leader online, via the website www.trinitysailing.org or call 01803 88 33 55.
