On top of all this we will soon be revealing some exciting new sailing destinations and experiences for 2015, so watch this space. As always there will be opportunities throughout the season for private charters, and we will be offering everything from short-breaks to extended cruises.

Young People Invited to Become Crew on Historic Vessel Sailing Across Europe Posted on

Young people from across the UK are being invited to step on board a historic vessel and set sail, with hundreds of other Tall Ships, across Europe.

The Trinity Sailing Foundation, based in Brixham, is hosting an Open Day on board Leader, built in 1892, on November 1st. People are being invited to take a look around the sailing trawler, meet others who have recently sailed on her and find out how they can become crew members next summer at the 2015 International Tall Ships Races.

The vessel will be heading to Belfast, next July, where she will race against hundreds of other Tall Ships to Alesund, in Norway. From there Leader will head out on a ‘cruise-in-company’ along the Norwegian coast to Kristiansand before then completing the final leg to Aalborg in Denmark.

Since their inception in the 1950s, the Tall Ships Races have been a world-class nautical event, attracting young people from all over the world. At each port thousands of local, people and tourists line the harbours and sea fronts to see this amazing spectacle.

This year dozens of young people, aged 15 to 25, headed out on the trip of a lifetime on board Leader at the 2014 Tall Ships Races, which took place across Holland, Norway, and Denmark. A group of young people on the first race of this epic adventure had their berths funded by generous sponsors from across the county including Caterfood, Darthaven Marina, The Blue Sea Food Company, Darnells, and LiNX Christian Youth Trust.

Sam Richardson, from Kingsbridge, who sailed on Leader at the 2014 Tall Ships Races, said: “I could never have dreamed of such a perfect adventure, I loved the entire experience.“

Alice Rumbelow, from Kingskerswell, said: “My favourite part of the experience was the start line, watching all the tall ships start was a phenomenal sight and certainly one I shall never forget.”

Trinity Sailing’s Harry Gottschalk said: “After speaking to the young people who were on board it has been so pleasing to hear how much they all got out of the experience. For some it has been genuinely life-changing and they have come back full of confidence and new skills which is exactly what they need as they either enter the world of full-time employment or further education.

“We hope to see lots of new faces come and visit Leader in November to meet our crew along with some of the people who took part last year and find out why the Tall Ships Races are so special.”

The open day on Leader takes place on Saturday, November 1, from 2pm, where young people are welcome to come along and bring their families. The boat will be moored on Brixham’s heritage pontoon which is situated opposite The Prince William pub.
