LiNX Christian Youth Trust supports Tall Ships Challenge Posted on

Trinity is delighted welcome on board the latest Tall Ships Challenge supporter.

The latest local organisation to support the 2014 Tall Ships Challenge is LiNX Christian Youth Trust in Torbay.  LiNX represents a commitment from a variety of local churches to serve young people, particularly within the context of local secondary schools.

Claire Farley, Project Manager for LiNX Christian Youth Trust, said “We are delighted that one of our supporters has helped to sponsor the Tall Ships Challenge on our behalf. We are thrilled that young adults in Torbay are being offered such an exciting opportunity.

Over the last 15 years we have worked with young people in Torbay to enable them to reach their full potential and we know that experiences like this transform people’s perspectives on life, on themselves, on their own ability and potential and on their future.  Through our work in secondary schools and in the local community we encourage young people to be adventurous and support them as they try new experiences which we know help them to grow in confidence and self esteem.

The Tall Ships Challenge will be a great adventure and an inspiration to all involved.”

Sail training success for pupils from Perry Beeches The Academy Posted on

A group of young people from Perry Beeches The Academy in Birmingham have recently stepped back ashore after a week-long sail training voyage on Leader.

The voyage was a resounding success and the young people had a great experience sailing Leader over 120 miles along the south coast, in conditions up to wind force 5. Following the voyage one of the young people on board said:  “It was great to do something completely out of my comfort zone and I didn’t just have lots of fun, but I have learnt loads too. Before the trip I didn’t really know anyone who was going on the boat too. Now, I have made some new friends and I have really loved every moment on the trip”.

On arriving back in Brixham the group were met by Rob Stevens, MD at Topsail Insurance Ltd., who had provided a bursary for the group. He was able to listen to all the tales from the young people and get a clear feel for the impact of the voyage on those involved.

PB 4“What a privilege to be sitting in the stairway of “Leader” listening to the young people, huddled around the saloon table, recounting the stories of their weeks adventure on board. Each in turn, offering up their best moment and their worst moment, hearing how each had contributed to the week not only with their own personal fundraising but their contribution to the ship and its workings.

It was clear that new friendships had been formed, new challenges and exciting new adventures had been undertaken and with the financial help of the Topsail Insurance bursary, we had been able to assist the group of young people from Perry Beeches The Academy in undertaking their adventure.

I am so pleased that the group enjoyed themselves, this is exactly what the Topsail Insurance bursary is all about, giving young people the opportunity to find out about sailing, teamwork and community and giving them an opportunity to build their confidence and carry away with them lasting memories.

Well done Perry Beeches The Academy for being worthy recipients of the Topsail Insurance Tall Ships Bursary”.

Tall Ships Challenge 2014 Launched Posted on

An exciting  initiative to send young people from Devon on a once-in-a-lifetime sailing adventure has cast off.

Trinity Sailing has teamed up with a handful of community focussed businesses to send a group of young people on a sailing voyage from Amsterdam, in Holland, to Fredrikstad, in Norway as part of the international Tall Ships Races.

People aged 18 to 25, from across the region, were invited to apply for a place on Trinity’s historic sailing vessel Leader. Following a selection process last month, the team of young people were brought together for the first time to start preparations for the Tall Ships Challenge 2014.

The event last week, based on Leader in Brixham, was the first stage in preparations for the Tall Ships Race and the young people got to look around the vessel and familiarise themselves above and below decks. They also got to try on their life-jackets and had a first go at working together to raise one of the sails.

One of the group, Sam Richardson, said: “I really enjoyed the experience and it was great to meet all the other people involved. Having never been on a ship like Leader before, it was great having a look around and get a feel for what we can expect during the Tall Ships race”.

Trinity would thank our generous sponsors for backing the Tall Ships Challenge and enabling these young people to undertake this unique opportunity.

The team will be posting blogs, twitter feeds and up-to-date news as they race Leader, so keep checking back on Trinity’s and our sponsors websites.
